Our Mission

Modern societies face complex and multi-faceted environmental problems. To address these problems in a holistic manner biodiversity research needs to be interdisciplinary, combining classical biological disciplines with social science and engineering science.

Interdisciplinary and problem-oriented biodiversity research has a high potential for application. Decision makers in legislation, administration and planning urgently need a sound scientific base for their biodiversity related policy.

Network-Forum for Biodiversity Research Germany (NeFo) addresses these challenges. First, NeFo organizes communication and collaboration between different scientific disciplines for biodiversity research to foster interdisciplinary research. Second, NeFo organizes communication between science and potential science users (politicians, administrators, planners etc.) We will make research results accessible to decision makers to facilitate decisions based on sound scientific evidence.

NeFo is a platform independent of existing (research and governmental) institutions and will complement these to fill gaps concerning communication and collaboration.

Our mission is to improve the contribution of biodiversity research to sustainable development in Germany and worldwide.

We offer the biodiversity research community opportunities to communicate with society by:

  • Presenting science to the public and media
  • Answering societal relevant questions
  • Supporting political discourse with a scientific foundation
  • Providing options for developing and implementing the German National Biodiversity Strategy and international agreements
